Bangkok Patana School has a strong ethos of community service. Our aim in the Secondary School is to provide all students with an understanding of the importance and value of supporting the wider community in a variety of ways.
Students become involved in community service through tutor and year group projects, through extra-curricular activities and as part of the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) component of the International Baccalaureate programme in Senior Studies. The activities support a huge range of projects which cover local, national and international issues.
Some of the activities have included:
Mercy Centre Club is dedicated to helping children from the Mercy Centre in the Khlong Toey slum to have fun afternoons at Bangkok Patana School once a month. This has been steadily growing and we have been able to welcome up to 70 childern on their Saturday visit. The children arrive by coach, for an afternoon filled with swimming, playing games and lunch. Volunteers from the Secondary School help out on the day to ensure the visit is a success.
Amnesty has long been part of the school community; it focuses primarily on protecting the rights of individuals. Over the past few years, Bangkok Patana's Amnesty Club has continuously grown and persevered in advocating human rights awareness in our school community. Amnesty's recent focus has been on political prisoners which included a campaign against the death penalty. Amnesty have also been involved in raising awareness for Human Rights Day each December. The recent funds raised will be donated to a charity in Mae Sot that supports Burmese migrants.
