Would You Stand Under a Paper Umbrella?

This term, Year 1 students will be learning about the properties of different everyday materials. To introduce this new unit of learning, the Year One team tested a variety of umbrellas which had been made out of different materials. One was made out of tissue paper, another was made out of card, the third was made out of fabric and the final umbrella was made out of plastic. The students had to make a prediction about which umbrella would be the best and worst and give a reason why. Unfortunately, some poor members of staff had to hold the umbrellas as they were tested and got quite wet! The students really enjoyed the Science Entry Point and they have generated some very interesting questions asking why other objects are made from certain materials.
