Appreciating Language Diversity

At Bangkok Patana, we are privileged to have an incredibly linguistically diverse community. Recently, learners in Key Stage 1 had the opportunity to listen to a story in their Home Language. Thanks to a group of wonderfully dedicated and enthusiastic parents, including a number from the Parent Home Language Helper Initiative, the key text for each Year group was translated into the languages of our students and then shared with them in a Year group wide reading session.

Students were able to access the story in Thai, English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch and Russian. Not only does this help provide our learners with opportunities to develop their Home Languages, but it also led to some very interesting discussions about the texts themselves, such as why some languages use letters and others use characters, why there might be no spaces between words, why some stories were read from left to right but others from right to left and how some languages shared the same letters, but these then made different sounds. What a great opportunity to explore and value our interculturalism and diversity!

If you would like to be part of the Parent Home Language Initiative please add your details here, we’d love to have you join us.
